If you want to be in the spotlight, then this is the position for you. A wide receiver will always be noticed when catching pass and outrunning the defence for a long touchdown. And few plays are as exiting for the fans as receiver reaching high in the air and making an acrobatic catch in the end zone - this is why the good receivers are stars. And even though a wideout (another name for receivers) doesn’t touch the ball as much as a running back, he will always get his chances to score, because when an offence really needs a long play, they have to pass the ball. It is a glamour position, where the players often seek to avoid contact with the defender, and why should they seek it, when they would rather be dancing in the end zone?
On every play the wide receiver stands near the sidelines on the edge of the offensive formation. At the snap of the ball he sprints down the field, he knows which route he will take, but he must shake of the cornerback across from him. He can do this using sharp cuts, speed and stutter stepping moves. If he can turn the corner one way and cut the other he can score an easy touchdown, but often the coverage is a zone, and hard to lose. Then if he gets separation from the covering defenders, he must hope that the QB has seen him and can throw a good ball. If this happens he needs to have the nerve and concentration to focus only on the ball and grab it knowing vicious linebackers and safeties might be closing quickly. If the ball is caught the wide receiver can finally sprint on to where he belongs – in the end zone.
What it takes
A Wide Receiver must be good at catching the ball. Even if the pass is poor and wobbly, if the ball is behind him or close to the ground, the receiver must be able to pull it in - the great ones can do this with just one hand! The second requirement is speed, if you are slow you are easy to cover, a receiver should be able to run away from most of the defenders, this is called burning the defence. It is also important to be able to cut at a high speed, if a receiver can run sharp routes, and cut fast, the defence wont be able to cover him. Finally it is an advantage to be tall and be able to out jump the defenders for the ball, but many small men have also played the receiver position with success.

wide receiver is an explosive, high profile position, if you are fast player with good hands.
