If a football team is a body, then the QB is definitely the brain. The position is the most visible and perhaps the most crucial on a team, and is synonymous with leadership and pressure. He is the catalyst in the passing game, and depending on his skills results may vary from huge chunks of yards and touchdowns, to catastrophic interceptions. Because of this the position is so closely associated with the outcome of games, and win or lose the quarterback is likely to get credit or blame.
The quarterback’s job starts before the play, in the huddle he directs his teammates, and calls the play. Then as his teammates line up, he looks at the defence and decides whether the play called is going to work. If he doesn’t think so, he can change the play at the line with at series of codewords, this is called an audible. Then he starts the play by calling out ’hut hut’ and receives the ball from the centre.
If it is a running play he has to hand the ball securely off to a running back. It is the quarterback’s responsibility that this exchange doesn’t end in a fumble, because the running backs eyes are looking at his blocks down the field. If the play is an option run or a toss, the quarterback has to read a defensive player, and pitch the ball to the running back; again he has to make sure the running back can catch it easily.
The passing plays are where the quarterback is truly tested. He drops back and in the whirlwind of aggressive defenders desperately trying to bring him down painfully, he has to make split-second decisions. From behind his offensive line he surveys the field looking for holes in the defence, and scans the pass routes his receivers are running. Usually there is a progression of reads, the quarterback checks his first option, if he is covered, the QB checks route number two and so forth.
Finally the quarterback must throw the ball, he must deliver it in a tight spiral, to a place where only the receiver can catch it, and preferably in stride so the receiver doesn’t have to slow down. Doing all these things correctly within the span of 3 to 5 seconds is extremely hard, and that’s why very few people can become good quarterbacks.
What it takes
It takes a special person to be the quarterback. The physical aspects are important, having a rocket arm and being tall are good things. But the main attributes a QB must have are mental.
Being a student of the game, a guy who understands the plays, systems and strategies, and can transfer this knowledge to the field is crucial. Also bravery and toughness is necessary, because the QB will get hit hard without being prepared for it. Finally he must be a hard worker, and a leader because the team must trust that he can win or they won’t follow him.
