If one counted the offensive line as a single player, this would undoubtedly be the most important position on the offence, but since they hardly ever touch the ball, they rarely get much recognition. Nonetheless the efforts of these five unheralded players determine the outcome of nearly all the offensive snaps. They are called on to pave the way for running backs by making punishing blocks and throwing their bodies at would-be-tacklers. Also it is their duty to protect the quarterback when he drops back to pass, and since even Joe Montana (hall of fame QB) can't complete a pass while lying on his back, this is absolutely essential.
The offensive line consist of one center, two guards and two tackles
The Center is the first player to touch the ball on each play, when he snaps it between his legs to the quarterback. Having the quickness and calmness to complete this task facing one or two defensive behemoths inches from your face requires nerves of steel.
The Center is flanked by two Guards, these players have to be fairly agile big men as they are sometimes called upon to pull behind the other linemen and lead the way for running backs. This maneuver is tricky, but the result can be a big lineman 'pancake-blocking' a smaller defender, so it’s a mouthwatering prospect for aggressive Guards.
At each end of the line stands an Offensive Tackle; this pair is often the most massive people on the entire football team. The size is especially valuable on passing plays where they have to form the corners of the 'pocket' that surrounds the quarterback. Here a large man has an advantage in walling of the smaller ends.
What it takes
A typical offensive lineman is a big guy, a few extra kilos is not a problem when using your bulk to move others. He doesn't have to be fast on long distances, but short area quickness is a plus.
Offensive linemen are usually smart players; they have to remember many different blocking schemes and assignments, since mistakes on their part usually cost the offence dearly. Finally a certain amount of tenacity, a mean-streak, is considered a good thing, since offensive linemen actually get to punish defenders a lot.
Overall
offensive line is the ideal place for big people, even those who haven’t been good at other sports can be valuable players here.
