The life of a defensive lineman is tough, every play he is hit by huge blockers, often more then one. He is hit high and cut blocked down low, and must fight for every inch. The DL forms the first line of the defense, and they sacrifice their bodies to stop the opposing RB. But the reward comes on pass plays where the quarterback drops back to pass. Then the linemen become the hunters and get to chase the ultimate prize – a clean hit on the QB before he releases the ball. A lineman who can create sacks, is extremely valued by coaches, since they can stop the opponents deep passing game.

There are two different types of defensive lineman: defensive tackles and defensive ends.

The Defensive tackles play in the very centre of the field, they are often huge men assigned to occupy blockers and let the linebackers behind them roam free. They try to create chaos in the offences blocking scheme, by penetrating through the middle of the line, and it is essential that they are never pushed back.

A defensive end attacks the edge of the offensive line. He must contain the running back, and stop him from reaching the sidelines on sweeps and tosses. It is also primarily up to the ends to pressure the quarterback. On passing plays the end can use his speed to beat the offensive tackle, by simply rushing around him, or he can use techniques such as the swim-move or rip-move to get past the blocker. A great defensive linemen like the Minnesota Vikings Jarred Allen is so good at this, that the offence often double-teams him with two players, otherwise the quarterback wouldn’t get any time to throw.

What it takes:

Ideally defensive linemen are big strong guys, for they are outnumbered by the massive offensive line, and must be able to stand their ground. They must have an explosive first step, to burst into the gaps in the line, and active arms to pull and rip blockers away from them. The defensive ends should also have a good enough balance to sprint and turn at the same time, when they try to speed rush around the tackles.

Overall: the defensive line is a good place to play if you enjoy contact and creating chaos.
